In the middle of March in Wisconsin, a city engagement session is ideal because everything is still very brown. Jordan and Michael were hoping for a small town feel instead of a Milwaukee photo session, so I suggested downtown Delafield. Downtown Delafield is actually quite picturesque with all of its different textures, colors, and architectural designs.
If a shooting location is “new to me,” I will either arrive early on the day of the session, or scope it out a few days prior to preselect spots. I did this before Jordan and Michael’s session, but ended up having to improvise a bit on session day due to their selected outfits and some unexpected wind. Jordan and Michael showed up looking so spiffy (which I love!), but due to that, it would have looked funny if I placed them in front of super colorful buildings. Instead, I opted for the most neutral and classic backgrounds that I could find. By far my favorite location was in front of the Hawk’s Inn, a historical Delafield landmark. We took a ton of portraits there, but for good reason. The clean, white porch complimented their elegant look so well and also provided a barrier from the wind.
These two are such a fun couple and I’m looking forward to their wedding later this year! Enjoy some of my favorite photos from their session below.
