What to Wear for a Professional Headshot Session

September 30, 2025

When you book a headshot session with me, my goal is to create photos that capture your professionalism, confidence, and personality. One of the biggest questions I get before a session is: What should I wear?

Here are some tips to help you feel prepared and look your best:

1. Stick With Classic, Timeless Pieces

Trendy outfits can date your photo quickly. Instead, opt for classic styles that won’t feel outdated in a year or two. A crisp blouse, tailored jacket, or solid dress shirt will always look polished.

2. Solid Colors are Often Best

Solid colors are always the best choice. Neutrals like navy, gray, black, and beige are safe and professional. Jewel tones—like emerald, burgundy, or cobalt—add a nice pop of color without stealing the focus. Soft pastels can also work beautifully. Try to avoid busy patterns, logos, or neon shades that can be distracting.

3. Layer for Depth and Structure

Blazers, cardigans, or jackets photograph well because they add shape and polish. Even if you don’t wear a jacket daily, having one for your headshot can make your photo look more intentional and professional.

4. Pay Attention to Fit

Clothing that’s too tight or too loose can be distracting. Tailored, well-fitted clothing always reads better on camera. If in doubt, bring a few options since all of my packages include more than one retouched headshot.

6. Simple Accessories Work Best

For ladies, keep jewelry minimal and classic. Simple earrings, a watch, or a delicate necklace can add personality without overwhelming your look. Large, flashy pieces may steal attention away from your face.

7. Grooming and Details Matter

Well-prepared details make a big difference in your final photos. Choose wrinkle-free clothing and take a moment to smooth out fabrics like silk or satin before your session. While I provide professional retouching, some things—like creases or stray hairs—are best handled ahead of time. If you normally wear makeup, a natural, polished application that enhances your features will photograph beautifully.

8. Bring Backup Options

Sometimes the lighting or background may affect how an outfit looks on camera. Having one or two extra tops or jackets gives you flexibility and ensures the best results.

The goal of your headshot is to highlight you—your professionalism, warmth, and confidence. The best clothing choices are the ones that help you feel comfortable and at ease while keeping the focus on your face. When you feel good in what you’re wearing, it shows in your expression and body language—and that’s what makes a headshot truly stand out. If you’re ready to update your headshot, I’d love to help you create images that feel authentic, polished, and professional. Get in touch to book your session today.
