If you’re dreaming of golden aspens, alpine lakes, and mountain backdrops for your engagement or couples photos, Guanella Pass should be at the top of your list. Located just over an hour from Denver, this scenic byway turns into a vibrant patchwork of fall color each September and October—making it a super popular photo location near Denver.
Last fall, I photographed Bella and Keith along Guanella Pass and it was easy to see why this spot is such a favorite. Although their session wasn’t for an engagement, the setting would be perfect for any couple looking to capture a special season in their relationship.
We made several stops during Bella and Keith’s session, each with its own unique backdrop:
Roadside Views with Golden Aspens
We pulled over along the pass where the aspen groves were glowing, making for easy-access portraits with that iconic fall look.
Clear Lake
This quiet alpine lake is one of the most scenic spots along Guanella Pass. The water reflects the surrounding peaks beautifully—especially in the early evening light. Bella and Keith walked along the shoreline, giving us space for both intimate close-ups and wide scenic shots.
The Summit of Guanella Pass
We finished their session at the top of the pass, where the views stretch in every direction. At 11,669 feet, the summit offers a panoramic landscape of rugged peaks, golden hillsides, and winding roads below. It’s a dramatic location that feels truly Colorado.
1. Time your session for peak fall color.
Mid to late September is typically the best time for fall foliage along Guanella Pass, though it can vary year to year. Weekdays tend to be less crowded, since this area gets a lot of visitors during peak season.
2. Dress for mountain weather.
The weather at high elevation changes quickly. Layers, sturdy shoes, and warm coats (even if you take them off for photos) are a must.
3. Plan for a few location stops.
One of the best things about Guanella Pass is the variety. You can start with aspens lower on the road, stop at Clear Lake, and end at the summit—each location offering its own mood and landscape.
Whether you’re recently engaged or just want to celebrate your relationship, Guanella Pass offers that blend of natural beauty, seasonal color, and adventure that makes for an unforgettable photo experience. It’s close enough to Denver for a half-day trip, but feels a world away with its quiet lakes, winding roads, and mountain air.
If you’re considering a Colorado engagement session in the fall, Guanella Pass is truly hard to beat. And if you need help choosing exact locations or planning around the crowds and lighting, I’d love to help you make it happen.
