Fall Engagement Photos in Rocky Mountain National Park: Tips + Inspiration

July 29, 2025

Thinking about taking your engagement photos in Rocky Mountain National Park during fall? You’re not alone — fall is one of the most magical times of year in RMNP. Between the golden aspens, dramatic sunsets, and the chance to see elk during rut season, it’s the perfect mix of wild, romantic, and breathtakingly scenic.

I had the chance to photograph Faith and Ian (a married couple, but their photos are perfect inspiration for engaged couples!) during peak fall color in RMNP. We spent the evening exploring some of the park’s most iconic locations — from Sprague Lake to Trail Ridge Road. Here’s what we experienced and a few tips to help you plan your own fall engagement session in the park.

Best Fall Engagement Photo Spots in Rocky Mountain National Park

Here are a few locations that I recommend to couples:

1. Sprague Lake

This accessible lake offers classic reflections of the mountains and is beautiful in soft early evening light. It’s great for couples who want an easy-to-reach location with dramatic scenery.

2. Trail Ridge Road

We made several stops at scenic pullouts on the way up, capturing the golden aspens at lower elevations. Once above the tree line, Trail Ridge offers sweeping mountain views, big skies, and one of the most iconic high-altitude landscapes in the park.

3. Wild Basin

If you’re up for a bit of a hike, Wild Basin is one of the best areas for fall color in RMNP. This section of the park is known for its dense aspen groves, cascading waterfalls, and quieter trails. It’s a hidden gem for couples who want a more adventurous (and less crowded) fall backdrop.

Tips for Planning Your Fall Engagement Session in RMNP

  1. Aim for Mid September to Early October
This is typically when the aspens are at their peak (though depends on weather conditions). The window can be short, so flexibility is key!

  2. Expect a Range of Weather
Fall in the mountains can mean 65° and sunny one minute, and 35° with strong wind the next. Bring warm layers.

  3. Don’t Forget the Permit
National parks no longer require a photography permit for portrait sessions, however, you may need timed entry to access RMNP (Timed entry runs May through mid-October).

  4. Watch for Wildlife
Seeing elk in the fall is a special treat, but be sure to keep your distance. We saw several herds from the car and even from some of the pullouts — a little patience can lead to some incredible moments.
