I’ve photographed so many engagement sessions in downtown Milwaukee, but I never seem to tire of finding new ways to photograph the city. I’m always looking for different locations, angles, and backdrops to create a session that feels fresh, even in places I’ve photographed many times before. The mix of architecture, city streets, and little pockets of nature gives you so many different looks without having to travel far. Naomi and Stephen’s engagement session was a perfect example of that.
Inspired by a previous downtown Milwaukee engagement session I photographed, Naomi and Stephen wanted a similar urban feel for their own engagement photos. We used that session as a starting point, then switched up the locations and created something that felt a little different while still incorporating some of the same downtown Milwaukee character. The result was a 100% city engagement session with a touch of fall.
We started near the Milwaukee River, using a variety of city backgrounds and locations to give the session plenty of variety. One of my favorite things about photographing engagement sessions in downtown Milwaukee is that you can move just a few blocks and completely change the look of the photos.
We incorporated recognizable Milwaukee details along the way, including the Riverside sign, the Milwaukee Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse, and the surrounding downtown streets and architecture.
Although this was a fall engagement session, we were a little early for peak fall color. Most of the trees hadn’t fully changed yet, so instead of trying to force a colorful autumn look, we embraced the season as it was. However, towards the end of the session, we found the perfect tree in the Third Ward. It had just enough fall color to bring a little warmth and seasonal color into the final portion of the session. Sometimes you don’t need an entire park full of colorful trees—a single great one will do.
Whether you’re looking for downtown Milwaukee engagement photos, lake views, or simply want your photos to feel connected to the city you love, Milwaukee provides plenty of options.
Naomi and Stephen’s session is a great reminder that an engagement session doesn’t have to fit into one particular style or location. You can take inspiration from another session, mix in completely different locations, add a little seasonal color, and create something that feels entirely your own.If you’re planning your own Milwaukee engagement session, I’d love to help you find locations and create a session that fits the two of you.
